Unraveling the Local News Together discussion guidelines
Read, reflect, listen and learn together in a facilitated discussion about topics in the news with a focus on Kansas or Topeka perspectives.
For this session, we will focus on recent public safety and crime coverage from local news sources including cjonline.com, wibw.com, ksnt.com, and Kansas Reflector.
As you skim or read local news, pay attention to how topics of public safety, crime, prevention, prosecution and related issues are covered and how these issues impact us locally in Topeka and Kansas. Some common questions in public safety discussions may include:
What public safety issues are most concerning to you? How does that compare to what is reported in the news?
Crime news can range from petty theft to more severe criminal activities. If you read or watch the news regularly, does this Community Crime Map confirm what you have learned about, or surprise you?
How does reading or viewing news about crime impact residents' sense of safety and well-being?
What community strategies for addressing concerns about public safety and crime do you see represented in our local news?
Some effective strategies for addressing public safety concerns include enhancing law enforcement, community policing and fostering an environment where residents are actively involved in safety initiatives. What strategies have you read about in our local news?
What other strategies have you learned about that might not only help in reducing crime rates but also in building trust and cooperation between the community and law enforcement agencies?
We will focus on being curious, listening to understand, raising questions, and identifying things we each want to learn more about.
The discussion will strive to remain nonpartisan, meaning the group does not expressly support one political party or candidate over another.
