This book club is not for the faint of heart. Come at your own risk as we discuss the darker side of books. This month we discuss Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
Morbid curiosity, or an interest in unpleasant things, is a human reaction captivating individuals across the nation. True crime media consumption, ranging from books to podcasts to documentaries, has grown rapidly in popularity and this book club leans into that. We may also touch on topics of cults, the paranormal and history as we explore the dangerous and more frightening side of the library's collection.
This month we will discuss The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson. It's Chicago 1893 and the masterful architect Daniel Hudson has successfully constructed a brilliant fair to become known at the 1893 World Exposition.
At the same time, H. H. Holmes, a man driven by a darkness that starkly contrasts Hudson's brilliance, is on a murderous streak, using the popularity of the fair to his advantage to lure in unsuspecting victims. Through a witty charm, Holmes draws in men, women and children to his hotel turned horror chamber that allows his dark endeavors to go undetected.
This thrilling true story highlights the opposing poles of sanity and insanity that drive two charming men towards very different life goals.
