Unraveling the Local News Together discussion guidelines
Read, reflect, listen and learn together in a facilitated discussion about topics in the news with a focus on Kansas or Topeka perspectives.
For this session, we will focus on recent education and school articles and media coverage from local news sources including cjonline.com, wibw.com, ksnt.com, and Kansas Reflector.
As you skim or read local news, pay attention to how topics of schools and education are covered and how these issues impact us locally in Topeka and Kansas. Some common questions in back-to-school discussions may include:
What motivates young people to learn and develop their skills? Do students need to be tested?
How has the development of technology affected learning?
How are challenges around mental health for students or staff addressed?
How are safety issues in or around schools addressed? How has this changed over the years?
What do district data reveal about our local schools in Shawnee County and Kansas? What do we learn about local schools from local news?
How is the general news coverage similar and different from what the school district or individual schools publicize in their press releases or social media?
As long as there are social classes in our culture, there will be disparities among public schools. How does a school district make sure everyone has access to what they need?
We will focus on being curious, listening to understand, raising questions, and identifying things we each want to learn more about.
The discussion will strive to remain nonpartisan, meaning that the group does not expressly support one political party or candidate over another.
