Unraveling the News discussion guidelines

Read, reflect, listen and learn together in a facilitated discussion about topics in the news with a focus on Kansas or Topeka perspectives.

For this session, we will focus on recent health and health care media coverage from local news sources including cjonline.com, wibw.com, ksnt.com, and Kansas Reflector. 

As you skim or read local news, pay attention to how topics of health, health care, and health insurance are covered and how these issues impact us locally in Topeka and Kansas. Some common questions in health discussions may include:

• Some believe health care is a commodity like shoes or umbrellas and that it should be distributed according to the ability to pay in the same way consumer goods are. Others believe health care is a need and it should be distributed according to need. What do you think?
• Should everyone be required to have health insurance, much as drivers are required to have auto insurance?
• How do personal choices like diet, exercise and smoking affect health and health care costs?
• With the Medicare population increasing, how should we pay for seniors' health care needs in the future?
• What are the primary factors contributing to the high cost of health care in the U.S., and how can these costs be contained?
• How do other public policies, such as those related to urbanization and industrialization, affect the development of health care systems?
• How are mental health care and dental care part of the health care system? How are they separate? 

We will focus on being curious, listening to understand, raising questions, and identifying things we each want to learn more about.

The discussion will strive to remain nonpartisan, meaning the group does not expressly support one political party or candidate over another.

Learn to knit and learn to crochet supplies will also be available for use during the discussion, or you can bring your own yarn project and supplies.
