This book club is not for the faint of heart. Come at your own risk as we discuss the darker side of books. This month we discuss The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale.
Morbid curiosity, or an interest in unpleasant things, is a human reaction captivating individuals across the nation. True crime media consumption, ranging from books to podcasts to documentaries, has grown rapidly in popularity and this book club leans into that. We may also touch on topics of cults, the paranormal and history as we explore the dangerous and more frightening side of the library's collection.
This month we will discuss The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale. It's the summer of 1860 and a three-year-old boy is found murdered. At the time, only eight detectives existed in all of England and rarely were they called from their homebase in London. With knowledge of the shocking crime, the Scotland Yard sent the best man, Inspector Jonathan Whicher, to solve the case. More shocking were the details of the crime and with only circumstantial evidence, Whicher was unable to convict the murder leaving him to return home a broken man.
