About the Therapist
Hello, my name is Melissa Gabel! I am a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC), and I received my Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy with a minor is psychology from The University of Kansas in 2020. As a part of my education I completed a six month internship at Valeo Behavioral Health Care in Topeka, KS working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness in group, individual, group home, and acute psychiatric settings.
Starting in 2021, I took on a full-time position serving women incarcerated at Topeka Correctional Facility as well as subcontracting with Pathway Family Services working with children and adolescents in a residential psychiatric facility. I created Solace & Sound, LLC in November 2021 to focus my impact on individuals in my community who need of my services. As of September 2022, I am transitioned from full-time at the women's prison to part-time as a hospice music therapist with Ascend Health to continue growing my private practice.
My musical background includes over 18 years of piano, 15 years of flute/piccolo, and 6 years of guitar/ukulele! During college, I also spent time learning the harp and joining the west African drumming group and Brazilian steel drum group!
More about me!
I am a Chinese adoptee who grew up in Dallas, Texas, and am currently living in Lawrence, Kansas. For all of high school and college, I participated in marching band on flute and piccolo! I love to volunteer at a local free community breakfast! When I am not working, I spend my time doing aerial silks, spending time with my husband, playing with my four cats, or immersed in a board games/video games! I hope to live in another country, travel the world, skydive, and fulfill my dreams of having a tiny home on a beach or in the mountains.
