This book club is not for the faint of heart. Come at your own risk as we discuss the darker side of books. This month discuss "Hell in the Heartland". Email kkriley@tscpl.org for a copy of the book.
Morbid curiosity, or an interest in unpleasant things, is a human reaction captivating individuals across the nation. True crime media consumption, ranging from books to podcasts to documentaries, has grown rapidly in popularity and this book club leans into that. We may also touch on topics of cults, the paranormal and dark history as we explore the dangerous and more frightening side of the library's collection.
This month we will discuss Hell in the Heartland by Jax Miller. Rural Oklahoma, December 1999. Two teen friends, Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible, were having a sleepover at Ashley's family's trailer home. The next morning, the trailer was found in a roaring blaze and the girls were missing. Theories would circulate in the year to follow, but the crime would go unsolved and the girls would remain missing. In 2015, crime writer Jax Miller decided to review the crime and set out towards Oklahoma to find out what happened that dark night in 1999. What she would uncover would be more than she could've bargained for.
