Morbid curiosity, or an interest in unpleasant things, is a human reaction captivating individuals across the nation. True crime media consumption, ranging from books to podcasts to documentaries, has grown rapidly in popularity and this book club leans into that. We may also touch on topics of cults, the paranormal and dark history as we explore the dangerous and more frightening side of the library's collection.
This month we will discuss The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold. Five women - Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane - have been forever linked together, despite having never met. Their lives were ripped away by the infamous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. In this work, Rubenhold reveals the truth of these women's lives and the misfortunes they were born into.
