Morbid curiosity, or an interest in unpleasant things, is a human reaction captivating individuals across the nation. True crime media consumption, ranging from books to podcasts to documentaries, has grown rapidly in popularity and this book club leans into that. We may also touch on topics of cults, the paranormal and history as we explore the dangerous and more frightening side of the library's collection.
This month we will discuss American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan. For more than a decade a bold killer was on the loose. He would abduct victims from various locations all across the United States in broad daylight then dispose of them mere hours later. The common link between his crimes would become known as his "kill kits," cases filled with cash, weapons and other tools he used to commit crimes. The kits were buried beneath the ground until it came time for use.
This killer ran free for more than a decade. When caught, the name Isreal Keyes became linked to the murderous pre-planner who committed unspeakable crimes then returned to the calm of his home in Alaska. America Predator reveals Callahan's research into this true-life man of horror and the ways law enforcement is limited in their pursuits for justice.
