Silents in the Cathedral

Relish a unique film and music experience watching the silent film "The Student of Prague (1926)" Organ music and percussion bring the film to life. Denise Morrison will share film history.

Our feature film for the 29th annual Silents in the Cathedral is The Student of Prague, a 1926 German expressionist film and one of the first and best examples of Faustin bargain stories. A student named Balduin (Conrad Veidt), who is the finest fencer at his university, strikes a deal with the Devil - a top-hatted, shady character named Scapinelli (Werner Krauss) – after meeting the girl of his dreams who happens to be wealthy while he is poor. For 600,000 gold coins, the student agrees to sell this devil anything in his room. When he chooses the student's reflection from a mirror, this doppelgänger always finds ways to be in the right place at the wrong time. The creature follows and haunts the student mercilessly until Balduin is forced to take drastic measures.

Silents in the Cathedral has been an annual community event for 29 years. The library partners with the Kansas Silent Film Festival, Inc. and Grace Episcopal Cathedral to put on this event.
